Montana is located up the hillside of Mount Ulriken– the highest of the seven mountains in Bergen - surrounded by nature, beautiful landscapes and different hiking trails, making the perfect starting point to enjoy Bergen and the Fjords; but this is only one of the things that make us special.
Since we opened as a hostel, in 1964, what really thrive us is the opportunity to use cultural exchange to make the world a smaller place. More than a provider of beds, we are an environmentally responsible spot where travellers can share experiences, discover new cultures and gather with the local community.

More than a place to cook, the guest kitchen is a popular meeting point and a pleasant spot to hang out and share exciting travel experiences with other hostel guests. Show off your cooking skills and Bon Appétit!
Feel free to relax in our TV lounge, make a jam session playing our piano, violin and guitar, or have a fun time playing Foosball and sharing experiences with other travellers in our common room after a busy day discovering Bergen's attractions.
Approximately 5 minutes in our view point is all you need to fall in love with Bergen. We mean it!

Our international volunteers organize free activities for our guests such as hikes, games, BBQ’s, sightseeing, music - or just lots of friendly talking during our daily free Coffee and Cookies - all in the name of bringing people together.
The right place for doing your dirty laundry! At Montana we have washing and drying machines available for our guests at a small fee. You may also borrow an iron at the reception for free.

At Montana we are concerned about the environment, and wish to reflect this attitude in our daily operations by purchasing environmentally friendly products, reducing energy consumption, and producing less waste!The hostel is proud to be HI-Quality and Sustainability certified, a label recognized by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council.
To achieve the Hostelling International Quality & Sustainability certificate (HI Q&S), the hostel needs to comply with a list of over 200 requirements based on the environmental, economic, and social aspects of sustainability.Montana contributes with the environment by installing LED lights in the whole building, using water saving showers, taps and toilets and eco label products for cleaning. The hostel also recycles 3 different types of waste and purchase products with local suppliers.
Our social volunteering program gives our guests and volunteers the opportunity to discover new places, meet new friends and interact with the local community while staying at Montana, by organizing activities open to all guests, and social events within and outside the hostel. By social volunteering it is possible to create a inclusive hostel vibe where both guests and volunteers gain means to reflect on the different communities and develop a greater appreciation for diverse people, cultures and societies.
Montana contributes with the local community through different partnerships. Our social volunteers, for instance, are helping every Sunday selling waffles and coffee for the local hikers on Baunehytten, a cabin owned by the local club Baune.The hostel provides space free of charge for different local projects, and also promotes events open for everybody in a way to connect guests with the local community, such as garage sales, waffle parties and movie nights.
Bees: our VIP guests! Not only do backpackers and tourists have a special place in Montana. Our hostel cooperates with a local Landås beekeeper by providing space and support for raising and caring for honeybees destined to crop pollination and honey production.Helping to save the planet is our main motivation, off course, but the wonderful smell of honey in our corridors is definitely a plus!
Food waste is a worldwide concern extremely harmful to the environment, including the climate. Thinking about that, and giving a closer look to the way guests and staff handle food waste in the hostel, we decided to take action to improve this scenery by changing routines and raising awareness for the consequences of food waste to the staff and guests, with the: “No crying over spilled milk: a food waste management project”.
Montana delivers the left over bread crusts discarded by it's guests to a sheep farm, and they love this treat to complement their diet.The food waste management project implemented at the hostel aims to find a more sustainable option of recycling Bergen Montana's food waste. Luckily, thanks to these lovely sheep, the bread crusts have a much better destination now!
